Sweet & Spooky
This is a top down, 2D roguelike shooter developed with Game Maker Studio. It was made by Kati Baker, Gabby Dumire, Destiny Dunn, Ryan Kubik, Ahmed Mian, and Tristan Snyder.
First developed during the gamemaker game jam in October 2016, Sweet & Spooky is a top-down adventure game where the player moves about a haunted mansion in search of jewelry to pay off their debts after buying too much Halloween candy. The game was first made with six rooms that would randomly switch when a player finds the exit. This was done so that each player’s run through the mansion, and every run a player can take through it, is different in some way. In the game, you can throw candy at the ghosts and monsters to defeat them; however, every time you throw candy at them you lose some health. The jewelry obtained in the game could be used to buy powerups from the store, making your run easier for you. The task we were given was to create a game with risk and reward in mind. Our risk was that you could use your health to fight off monsters, making you more vulnerable to losing the last of your health, the reward of using your health was the ability to move further in the mansion, allowing you to collect more jewelry and increase your score. There is also another form of risk and reward in the game. This time it involves using the store, and reducing your score. In the shop, you can use your score to buy powerups that will help you progress further, this is risky though, because if you end up losing after spending all of your points in the shop, your score will be very low. In its current form, the only powerup in the store is to get more health/candy, and there is no scoreboard. The next iteration of the game, would include a wider variety of powerups in the store, a scoreboard, and small bug fixes.
