Pobsy's Big Adventure
This is an adventure game made by Gabrielle Dumire. It was made using Game Maker Studio, MuseScore, and Microsoft Paint.
Pobsy’s Big Adventure is a simple and short game developed for Paint Jam during March, winning 2nd place overall in the Jam. The Jam concept was the creation of a game using only the default Microsoft Paint included with Windows for art assets. It is a simple game focused around playing as a blue creature named Pobsy and helping the neighbors during their daily activities. Each of these activities is performed as a minigame after a brief dialogue introduction. The mini games include a rhythm-based dancing game, an apple collecting game, and a fly catching game. The game is played using both a mouse and keyboard controls.
The story is very simple and the target audience is definitely centered at children, despite the original jam idea being more pessimistic. The original game idea was that Pobsy was trying to be friendly but the neighbors were rude and unaccepting, which evolved into the idea of Pobsy having depression and thus struggling to be happy even after doing good things all day. This became a much more easily digested demon that Pobsy would “battle” at the end of the game, which was scrapped because I could not find a way to fit that into the existing friendly game it starts out as. This also saved me more time to work on polishing the other minigames.
Every piece of Pobsy was created by me, including the music. Four music pieces, over 30 art assets, and all of the code was created in the 48 hours. The only colors used were those in the default Microsoft Paint palette, which created some difficulty in making the assets not be an eyesore. Personally, I feel Pobsy has been one of my favorite games to create and a large achievement in my hobby-turning-career as a game developer.
The game can be played here.
